Titanic: The Musical
April 18, 2007 - April 21, 2007
“Titanic” is a musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. It swept the 1997 musical Tony Awards winning all five it was nominated for including the award for Best Musical and Best Score. Titanic is set on the ocean liner RMS Titanic which sank on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912.
“Still humming many of the songs”
I thought the opening night of Titanic: The Musical, performed by Middlesbrough Youth Theatre at Middlesbrough Theatre, was a spectacular evening’s entertainment but I felt that the Gazette review didn’t really do it justice.
The quality of the young people’s performances, particularly the choral singing, was superb and beautifully complemented by the orchestra.
You rightly commented on how well the three main characters performed. However Paul Rymer, Elliot Powell, Jess Robinson and Laura Matthews also deserved recognition for their outstanding character portrayals and excellent singing.
The set and the costumes, which looked very professional, added hugely to the musical. I don’t agree with your paper’s assertion that there were no memorable musical numbers in the show (I’m still humming many of the songs), though I recognise music is a matter of personal taste.
When the musical was launched on Broadway in 1997 it won five Tony awards, including those for best musical and best score.
My congratulations go to all concerned.
